What are the symptoms of a broken car starter?

2025-02-18

When a car starter fails, the following symptoms may appear:

1. When the ignition switch is turned on, the starter only idles and cannot start the engine.

2. After the ignition switch is turned on, although the power-on system shows normal, the starter does not respond.

3. When trying to start the vehicle, you may hear a knocking sound between the starter drive gear and the flywheel gear, which indicates that the starter drive gear is not engaging the flywheel teeth properly.

4. After turning on the ignition switch, if you hear repeated "click" sounds from the electromagnetic switch but the starter does not rotate, this may be a problem with the starter's electromagnetic switch.微信图片_20250114190006(1).jpg

These symptoms may be related to the following causes of starter failure:

1. Bent armature shaft inside the starter, too tight bearings, dirty or burned rectifier, brush wear too short, too soft spring resulting in poor contact, and short circuit, open circuit or grounding of armature coil or field coil.

2. Problems with the starter solenoid switch may also cause failure, such as coil open circuit or poor contact of the contact plate.
